Sports Remedial Massage treatment is a massage technique that deals with the body’s soft tissue. It has developed over the years to deal with the specific conditions that the human body experiences when it has been pushed too far. It uses such techniques as MET (muscle energy technique), Soft Tissue Release and NMT (neuromuscular technique).
Normal healthy moving muscle is a soft gel like substance. However, when our muscle movement is restricted, in the case of injury or postural misalignment, tissue fluids do not reach the areas they should, to lubricate the muscle. The muscle begins to become hard and scar tissue forms trapping toxins such as lactic acid within that particular area. This is what causes the pain and dysfunction as the body tries to sort out the problem, this could lead to your body trying to compensate, which can cause further pain and problems.
Sports massage is often combined with remedial massage, which uses the same techniques to aid healing and rehabilitation of injuries to improve movement.
So a sports and remedial massage is just as important to someone who works in a office at a computer all day or driving a car as it is to an Olympic athlete suffering a torn hamstring!
What happens in a sports remedial massage session?
Your sports massage therapist will take a medical history looking at your general health and any symptoms, past and present that you need some help with. You will then lie on the massage couch and the sports massage therapist will begin the treatment. A question many people have is, will it hurt? Sports massage is a firm massage and it is important that you communicate with your Sports massage therapist if you are feeling any discomfort. It is not unusual to feel a little sore for a couple of days after the therapy this is perfectly normal and shows that good work has been done. After the treatment is finished the therapist will discuss what they think is an appropriate course of treatment and may give you some stretches to do to enhance the treatment.
Commonly asked questions about Sports Remedial Massage
After an injury when can I have sports remedial massage treatment?
We recommend that you wait around 48 hours, deep tissue work during this period can aggravate the injury and could cause further damage. After this initial rest period treatment can begin.
How long before I can start training again?
It is important to realize that some people get better quicker than others. Some injuries can be healed after only one treatment whereas others may take several weeks. At the first session you will be given some indication as to your recovery time.
I work at a computer terminal all day and have neck and shoulder pain, can you help?
Yes! It doesn't matter how you get a muscle injury, whether it is from running a marathon, gardening or working at a computer, many of our clients do not take an active part in sports and can still develop a muscle injury.
