What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a method of counselling that looks at how you perceive yourself, the world and other people and how this is preventing you from achieving your values and goals.Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can help you change how you think and behave in certain situations.
(CBT) focuses on what is happening in the present day instead of the cause of distress and the symptoms you are expereincing. This method of therapy looks to improve your state of mind in the hear and now. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy does this by helping you to break down the issues you are experiencing to manageable smaller parts, enabling you to see how these parts are connected and how they are affecting you.
Commonly asked questions
Is CBT confidential?
The answer to this is yes. All counsellors are bound by a code of ethics and at no point will your details ever be discussed without your permission to anyone including family, work or friends. There are however a few exceptions, where a child is in danger or if you are in immediate danger from yourself, or are likely to harm any one else, or you are going to break the law.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions very much depends on the issues you have and your own needs.
Are my problems ‘important’ enough for counselling?
No problem is too large or to small.
If I want to make an appointment how long will I have to wait?
Usually you can be seen within a week, if you wish to see a specific counsellor or need an evening appointment you may have to wait 2-3 weeks.
If I need further counselling will I see the same person?
The answer to this is yes, unless for some reason you did not get on with the counsellor or the counsellor thought you would be better suited seeing someone else. In these instances this would be discussed with you to ensure you are happy with the arrangements.
How long will the appointment last?
Appointments last between 50 and 60 minutes
Guidelines for those new to treatment
In the early stage of therapy it is not unsual to experience a "honeymoon period" this effect of symptom relief may feel good. But it is important not to stop therapy at this time, without getting to the source of the problem, you may replace existing problems with other issues.
During therapy it is not unsual for a time to feel worse before you feel better, when therapy feels difficult it is important not to give up - be honest with our therapist and discuss your feelings and reactions this will help you move forward.
