Post traumatic stress disorder is a reaction to a incidence or event that causes a set of reactions. Everyone experiences and reacts differently to a traumatic incident responses can change over time or vary in severity but for some people this can manifest its self as post traumatic stress.

Symptoms of post traumatic stress:
An individual may not be able to stop thinking about the event it seems to occupy all their thoughts making it difficult to get on with every day life. They may experience a feeling of fear, colours images and memories that are unwanted from the event.

Alternatively the person may make every effort to avoid thinking or speaking about the incident, although in the short term this strategy may work for them it can lead to isolation and avoidance this may lead to a feeling of numbness and prolonged shock.

It is not unusual for someone in this situation to feel as though their personality has changed feeling increased sense of irritability, problems with sleeping, concentration and memory. a sense of always needing to be ultra-alert a sense of being vulnerable, leading to a fear of losing control, forgetting an important aspect of the event , guilt at surviving, or for things not done.

Causes of post traumatic stress are wide and varied:

Essentially it is any traumatic event that effects a persons sense of self such as,
•Accident
•Assault
•Witnessing a natural disaster
•Life threatening incident
Although there is no hard and fast rule it is suggested that a person waits around 4 weeks before seeking professional help.
Whether this is through counselling, hypnotherapy or cognitive behavioural therapy.
