Commonly asked questions
Is counselling confidential?
The answer to this is yes as counsellors of all descriptions are bound by a code of ethics at no point will your work or family be contacted. There are however a few exceptions, if a child is in danger or if you are in immediate danger yourself or are likely to harm any one else or you are going to break the law.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions very much depends on the issues you have and your own needs.
Are my problems ‘important’ enough for counselling?
No problem is too large or to small, the counsellor is not there to make any judgments about how you are feeling.
If I want to make an appointment how long will I have to wait?
Usually you can be seen within a week, if you wish to see a specific counsellor or need an evening appointment you may have to wait 2-3 weeks.
If I need further counselling will I see the same person?
The answer to this is yes, unless for some reason you did not get on with the counsellor or the counsellor thought you would be better suited seeing someone else. In these instances this would be discussed with you to ensure you were happy with the arrangements.
How long will the appointment last?
Appointments last between 50 and 60 min
Guidelines for those new to counselling
In the early stage of therapy it is not unusual to experience a "honeymoon period" this effect of symptom relief may feel good. But it is important not to stop therapy at this time, without getting to the source of the problem, you may replace existing problems with other issues.
During therapy it is not unusual for a time to feel worse before you feel better, when therapy feels difficult it is important not to give up - be honest with your therapist and discuss your feelings and reactions this will help you move forward.
