Children and young people can face a range of challenging life situations. Traumatic events such as divorce, bereavement, or bullying may be very hard for them to process; for some children and young people, the stress of exams, illness or social pressures can be tough. In a range of circumstances, children and young people may benefit from the additional support that counselling provides.

Our experienced counsellor creates a safe, nurturing space in which children and young people are able to express and make sense of their often confusing emotions. Using age-appropriate methods, they are gently encouraged to describe how they experience their world and their emotions. A trusting therapeutic relationship enables children and young people to reflect on their experiences in a non-judgemental atmosphere. They are also taught coping mechanisms that will continue to stand them in good stead throughout life.

As the Wellbeing Nottingham counselling for children sessions progress, the child or young person is better able to manage their feelings and understand their responses. Counselling leads to enhanced self-esteem and a greater ability to deal with life’s challenges

Charlotte Lewis is our children’s counsellor, and can work with children age 5 to 13.

We are often asked what tools Charlotte uses with younger children she may use toys or tools such as these in the pictures bellow.

Mood Cards Mood cards are useful in helping children identify their feelings, understand and talk about them. Children can choose multiple cards to help share how they feel in the moment, in the past or how they want to feel in the future. Each card has questions that can encourage children to talk and explore that feeling.

The Therapeutic Treasure Deck These cards provide questions that spark up discussions and conversations with children and adolescents. They provide a fun safe way for children to explore and make sense their thoughts and feelings. The sentence completion cards in this deck are very good at encouraging children and teenagers to talk about things in a sensitive, non-intrusive way.

The Story Cubes The Story Cubes are a great way for children and teenagers to share experiences, thoughts and emotions through creating a story. It allows a safe way to process experiences and bring them into the therapy room. Talking about negative feelings and experiences can be difficult for everyone, especially children, but these cubes provide a safe way for children to do so.
