Guest Blog: Did you know that reiki can help animals

For as long as I can remember I have always wanted to work with animals and make them better.

Like many, life gets in the way and it becomes harder and harder to follow our true calling. Just over 5 years ago my life changed and I had the opportunity to pursue my dreams, which all began with an animal reiki course in Norfolk. I had already completed human reiki courses many years earlier but had always wanted to do something for animals and this was perfect. I knew that I didn’t want to retrain as a vet or become an animal massage therapist, I wanted to do something different. I wanted to help animals not only physically, but also emotionally.

Although I did my animal reiki training in 2011, I didn’t become serious about practising animal reiki last year when my life took an unexpected turn and I was finally placed on my true life path.

Animal reiki is truly special; it allows me to connect with animals on so many different levels. Animals, like people, are all incredibly different. Each animal has its own unique personality. Through reiki I am able to connect with the universal energy which is all around us to support an animal’s healing journey on a physical, emotional and/or behavioural level.

Before reiki can be given to any animals, a relationship based on trust and respect must be formed. Every animal I see has the right to refuse reiki and I will only ever give reiki with the animal’s consent. Often it can take time to build up a relationship with an animal, especially for animals who have suffered mistreatment at the hands of humans. Most animals are very open to reiki, but some can take a little more time.

For me, the healing power of reiki never ceases to amaze. Reiki can benefit animals on so many levels. It can help support those animals that have suffered past trauma, or help speed up recovery post-surgery. It can help those animals suffering from emotional issues such as separation anxiety and to me, the most special of all, it can help those animals taking their transition. What better way to thank your pet for their unconditional love than to ease their transition from this world to the next?

Reiki can be used on all creatures great and small, there are no limitations. Yes, even a goldfish can receive reiki! Reiki can be given to an animal in person but it can also be given from a distance. On many occasions over the years I have taken pictures of animals on my travels and used those pictures to send distance healing to those animals, which are often in greatest need.

Reiki is so much more than a therapy; it is a way of life.
