Do you REALLY need that sunscreen?

You may have seen the news reports recently stating that two of the UK’s most popular sunscreen brands don’t offer as much protection as they claim. This probes the question, are ANY sunscreens good for us?


Of course, we would always advise against getting burnt and we would never suggest sunbathing unprotected. However, have you ever stopped to think about the amount of toxins in a regular bottle of sun cream?

The average bottles of conventional sunscreen lotions have been found to contain a number of toxins that can be carcinogenic, and disrupt hormones. Plus, we need some sun exposure for vitamin D, something that many of us are deficient in.

So what can you do to protect your skin from sun damage?

Use Natural Sunscreen. Luckily for us, there is a huge range of natural sunscreen available. These creams don’t contain hormone-altering toxins, and offer the same amount of protection as any high street brand. They are kinder to your skin, and are safe for children as well. Eat your SPFs. A diet high in antioxidents, vitamins and heathy fats can help your skin to protect its self. This list from Dr Axe gives us a few ideas…

  • Resveratrol (red wine, blueberries and red grapes)
  • Omega-3 fatty acids (salmon and fish oil)
  • Astaxanthin (salmon and fish oil)
  • Catechins (green and white tea)
  • Vitamin E (pumpkin seeds, almonds, and asparagus)
  • Beta-carotene (carrots and red bell peppers)

Don’t over expose your skin in the sun. Wear a hat, and cover up in light clothing before you start to burn.

Lastly, enjoy the sun, we see so little of it in this country and it’s essential to our overall wellbeing. Take sensible precautions with you and your children and remember, everything in moderation!
